Peace
Keith Binns March 2012
The old men
Listen, listen and listen but do not hear.
Look, look and look but do not see.
And their children’s, children’s children
Will curse them as they weep.
Peace, peace, peace when there is no peace.
Ice is melting, seas are on the rise.
Hurricanes march northwards through the skies.
Hush a while and hear the fears
But you can’t hear if you’ve stopped your ears.
Peace, peace, peace when there is no peace.
Weep for your children’s, children’s kids.
They’re the ones who’ll pay for what you did.
For the ignorance and lies
The deliberate closing of your eyes
Peace, peace, peace when there is no peace.
The old men
Listen, listen and listen but do not hear.
Look, look and look but do not see.
And their children’s, children’s children
Will curse them as they weep.
Peace, peace, peace when there is no peace.
Extra verse
Coral's bleaching, tourism is shot
Running out of power when it's hot
But they tell us things are fine
Let's give all the water to the coal mine
Peace, peace, peace when there is no peace.

Beach Shack

Beach Shack Nov 2018 Keith Binns
My grandfather loved me, as grandfather’s do
He pushed on my swing, he tied up my shoe.
He had an old shack at his own secret beach
Far, far away but still within reach.
And we’d stay every Christmas and play on the sand,
Play in the water, it was our sacred land.
And he’d smile at me then as he turned out the light
Saying it would be mine some day
The shack would be mine some day.
The years hurried past as years always do
The beach seemed much smaller the more that I grew.
The memories from childhood were partly to blame
But there was something else with a hand in the game.
Climate Change came and was stealing the sand
Little by little there was less and less land.
Grandfather scoffed and said it was a lie
Beaches change all of the time
Beaches change all of the time.
We tried to convince him, gave him facts and figures
He just wouldn’t listen, a complete waste of time.
He’d just read an article in his favourite paper
Heard a microphoned liar say that all will be fine.
My grandfather loved me of that I am sure
But I wish he had loved me a little bit more
And thought of my future and what it would mean
If the scientists turned out to be right
If the scientists turned out to be right
Grandfather passed and everyone cried
But later some said it was best that he’d died.
For he loved that old shack, said it was mine to keep
But that which you sow is that which you reap.
A big storm one night and the shack was no more
Just memories and love washed up on the shore.
Our temple was gone, our sacred land bare.
If only he’d loved a bit more,
If only he’d loved a bit more.

Dodging the Brumby Poop

Dodging The Brumby Poop
January 2014 Keith Binns
1. Walking down the Snowies, turned left at Dead Horse Gap,
Following the Thredbo River up to the Chimney stack.
The scenery was fantastic but you didn’t dare to look.
You were too busy staring at your feet, dodging the brumby poop.
Chorus
Dodging the brumby poop, every second step you took.
Great big piles of brumby crap in what’s not their natural habitat
(Last verse: And why do they always do it in the middle of the track?)
It makes you want to go rata tat tat when you’re dodging the brumby poop.
2 Brumbies look so romantic, powering through the snow
But those nags are going where no nags should go
Grazing on the Snowies, hard hoofs on its soft ground
And leaving fertiliser where no fertiliser should be found
3 The Man From Snowy River has a lot to answer for
Making folk love brumbies instead of showing them the door.
They’re an ecological disaster, they’re doing lots of harm.
If you love’m so much then catch’m and keep them on a farm.
Tag: Equines in unnatural terrain. How will they be allowed to remain?
But the politicians all seem to have brumby poop for brains when they’re
Dodging the brumby poop.

1. It’s great to live in Goulburn, it’s where I wanna be
With Eastern Greys grazing on the Wetland and staring back at me
A lighthouse blinks on Rocky Hill though there’re no ships to see
And there’s a possum climbing up my old Hills Hoist, heading for the almond tree.
We’re centrally located, just like the housing ads all say
It’s two hours to the big smoke and Canberra’s just an hour away
And if you’re longing for the beach then you don’t have to stay
It’s an hour and a half to Wollongong or down to Batemans Bay.
And it’s great to live in Goulburn.
2.We’re tucked between two rivers, the Wollondilly and the Mulwaree
Parts are clear long reaches and parts you can hardly see
They’re mostly choked with willows, and of course the blackberry
But go out and back on the Wollondilly track and there are geese hissing at me.
If you like to paddle your own canoe, the Wollondilly’s here
Down at the back of Bradfordville or on Marsden or Rossi Weir
There’s Pejar Dam or Bulls Pit Rd, the Wollondilly’s near.
But at Tallowa Dam or Warri Beach the Shoalhaven will appear.
3. Goulburn’s a bit of a railway town, we’ve got a train museum
And Stan the man will show you round if you would like to see’m
When they shunt the trains at midnight, it almost makes you scream
Like giants clanging pots and pans it echoes in your dream.
But Global Warming’s really hit, the lack of rain’s a trial
The Wollondilly’s getting dry, puts a frown upon your dial
What we’re leaving for the kids and grandkids is really rather vile
And those idiots down in Canberra are all still in denial.
4. For that smoke we’ve all been breathing has sent a message clear
It’s time to stop the arguing, Climate Change is here.
It’s slowly getting hotter bit by bit and year by year
But those greedy politicians and their mining mates just don’t want to hear.
It’s great to live in Goulburn, it’s where I wanna be
But I’m worried about the future, as worried as can be
Will we run out of water, will the Eastern Greys all flee,
Will there still be no possum up my old Hills Hoist, heading for the almond tree?
Will it still be great to live in Goulburn?
Will it still be great to live in Goulburn?

The greedy and stupid have won
July to October 2022
The greedy have won
The horror will come
Not enough has been done
But who cares?
The rich will be fine
Sipping their wine
Going to dine
So who cares?
While the poor and the average battle away
Trying to get to the end of the day
They are the ones who will pay and pay
But who cares?
And how do we deal with our anger
At such an enormous fail
Knowing greed and stupid denial
Have led to our ultimate betrayal.
Have led to our ultimate betrayal
And how do we deal with our sorrow?
And how do we deal with our grief?
Knowing disaster is coming
Just simmers away underneath.
Just simmers away underneath.
Knowing the oceans are rising
Knowing the storms will increase
Because the Earth’s getting hotter
Just simmers away underneath
Just simmers away underneath
Musical break
We weep for what we are leaving
To our daughters and to our sons
Knowing it didn't have to be this way
But the greedy and stupid have won
The greedy and stupid have won
And the rich will be fine
‘Cos they're always fine
And the stupid will just have to suffer
With the rest of us, the best of us
But the greedy and stupid have won
The greedy and stupid have won
If you think I'm too pessimistic
Then simply prove me wrong
Act swiftly to end the horror
And I'll write another song
I'll write another song.
